Itineraries in Puerto Maldonado, Madre de Dios - South America
The city of Puerto Maldonado is the capital of the Madre de Dios region in southeastern Peru. It is also known as the gateway to the southern Amazon rainforest. To fully enjoy the city, it is recommended to visit the central Obelisk tower, which offers a beautiful view from the top of the city along with local history exhibits. On the banks of the Madre de Dios River, there is a busy pier for transporting people and goods very close to the Plaza de Armas. Also near the city is the biodiverse Tambopata National Reserve, which stretches across the savanna and old-growth rainforest.
Day 01: Tambopata – Madre de Dios River – Accommodation.
At 9:30 am, we pick you up from your hotel to go to the main port to take a boat where we will navigate for approximately 40 minutes on the Madre de Dios River until we reach our tourist accommodation where you will stay for the next few days. Upon arrival, we will provide a delicious regional fruit drink. Meanwhile, we will give you information about the lodge and emphasize the activities to be performed during the tour. After listening to the instructions and recommendations, you will be given time to settle into your rooms. When you are ready, we take a walk through part of the jungle to see and learn about some ancient trees we will find along the way, with chances to see monkeys, birds, and insects in their natural habitat. 1 pm: Lunch. Then in the afternoon, we go kayaking on the Madre de Dios River to have more contact with nature and enjoy to the fullest, and to see some wildlife like turtles, butterflies, parrots, or toucans crossing the river. By kayak, we will reach an island inhabited by a family of capuchin monkeys; they are now on this immense island which is their natural habitat; we will walk in search of the monkeys. And at night before dinner, we will get ready for a night boat ride, looking for caimans whose eyes usually glow at night when illuminated with a flashlight; this time is perfect because they come out to look for food or hunt other nocturnal animals such as capybaras, majas or picuro, and armadillos—there are chances to see these mammals as well. 8 pm: Dinner. FRANPISCO ADVENTURE offers an optional activity: a Bonfire, to talk about jungle stories and live a different experience making fire in the middle of the darkness.
Day 02: Madre de Dios River – Sandoval Lake.
At 4:30 am: Breakfast. 5:00 am: We visit Sandoval Lake, located in the Tambopata National Reserve, a beautiful 3-kilometer water mirror, extraordinarily rich in flora and fauna biodiversity. To visit this beautiful lake, we take a 3-kilometer walk, and along the way, there are palm clay licks rich in minerals where macaws go very early to lick the palms. The lake is surrounded by aguaje mauritia palms, orchids, and timber trees such as lupinas and shihuahuacos which are animal habitats; here we can observe animals in their natural habitat such as howler monkeys, turtles, black caiman, giant otters (which are endangered), many resident birds like herons, tiger herons, kingfishers, toucans, and the hoatzin or shansho, which is a prehistoric bird. Your local guide will give you more information about the different types of ecosystems existing in this beautiful lake. TAMBOPATA RAINFOREST TOURS. 1 pm: Lunch. Sport fishing: it is very interesting because we can appreciate some parrots and toucans while navigating the river; we usually catch piranhas, paco, gamitana, palometa, sardines, and some catfish like bagre, doncellas, and many varieties that inhabit our beautiful Amazon. We will have the opportunity to catch them and bring them for our dinner; they can be prepared with the help of the chef. Afterward, we will get ready for the night walk activity; it is very different walking by day and night. Along the path, you can observe crickets, grasshoppers, fireflies, frogs, toads, tarantulas, and some reptiles like snakes and tree lizards like the famous (plica plica) which is a master of camouflage. Most importantly, you will feel the symphony of the jungle. 8 pm: Dinner.
Day 03: Sandoval Lake – Tambopata Hotel.
At 8 am: Breakfast. Afterward, we visit the tapir trail; at the end of this, we can find an area of aguaje palms where they like to eat those wild fruits. This is a humid zone where tracks of other animals are also found. This walk takes approximately 3 hours, where we have chances to see wild pigs, some rodents, toucans, and oriole birds. IMPORTANT FACT: From November to April, this area floods with water and becomes a habitat for Anacondas. The type of jungle that changes according to the season is super interesting. Locally called 'aguajales' or swampy areas. 1:00 pm: Lunch. 4:30 pm: We return to the city and your Tambopata hotel.
