Cusco, Peru - The Archaeological Capital of America
The city of Cusco (or Cuzco) is a historic city in the Peruvian Andes, former capital of the Inca Empire and Historic Capital of Peru, famous for its incredible blend of Inca and Spanish colonial architecture, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983. It is the most important tourist center in southern Peru and South America, visited by millions of national and international tourists for its sacred sanctuary of Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. Known as the 'Imperial City' or the 'Navel of the World', it stands out for its Plaza de Armas, the San Blas neighborhood, the Temple of the Sun (Qoricancha) and archaeological sites such as Sacsayhuamán, Chincheros, Moray, Ollantaytambo and Pisac.
