Day 04: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
After an early breakfast we will board the first buses that leave from Aguas Calientes to the Machu Picchu entrance control; the bus takes about 20 minutes. Immediately we enter the mysterious Machu Picchu guided by an English or Spanish speaking guide. The oldest Inca citadel 'Machu Picchu' is located at an altitude of 2360 m, much lower than Cusco. Our guide will show you the citadel for around 2 hours, then you will have free time to explore the Inca citadel. According to the history told, the Spaniards never discovered Machu Picchu, so the city has been well preserved. In 1911 after having been hidden in the jungle for years, the city was discovered by the American Hiram Bingham. The Inca citadel of Machu Picchu can be reached by train or by walking, because it is situated on a plateau in the middle of capricious rock formations. Archaeologists assume that it was once a religious city of the Incas, but the precise function is still unknown. After the visit to the Inca citadel, we go down to the town of Aguas Calientes so you can have lunch and take the train to Ollantaytambo. In Ollantaytambo, transport awaits us for transfer to the city of Cusco.
